My signature style is all about mixing patterns, prints, bold colors and luxurious textures, so today’s all black everything look is a little outside of my style box. I’m a big believer in dressing for your mood whether that’s to perk you up, give you confidence or make you feel more festive. When I’m sleep deprived and tired, I always make a point to wear a heel and something dressy, and it always gives me more energy and makes my day so much better.
What we wear has the power to communicate to the world who we are, where we are going and where we have been. So for me, piling on a striped turtleneck, moto jacket, black velvet pants and Gucci cross body bag tells the world that today I’m all about business and need to keep it simple. Being a new mom, I have a lot less time to dress, so piling on the neutrals is an easy way to look put-together and get out the door in no time.
Almost three years ago, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and during that time what I wore definitely had the power to cheer me up and give me strength when I was feeling so overwhelmed and scared. Brocades, jacquards and bright stripes were in heavy rotation during that time reminding me of the happy, healthy person I was and the happy, healthy person I would continue to be. This February it will be three years of health and happiness since that very trying time, and I could not be more thankful for the perspective that experience has given me.
Whether it’s the best of times, or the most challenging of times, take comfort in knowing that there is an outfit for it all that can give you just what you need on that particular day. As the late and great Bill Cunningham so perfectly put it, “fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.”
