I’m a firm believer that life happens in the middle. Through all the highs and lows, the happiest and most frequent times are somewhere in the middle of tired and rested, happy and sad, busy and bored. As the years go by this becomes more and more true to me in life, and becomes more and more true in my closet.
In my college and post-grad years, my closet seemed to have two extremes…super dressy cocktail attire and really casual t-shirts, and I struggled when I needed to be stylish yet comfortable aka in the sartorial middle. Well over the years, my closet, like my life, landed somewhere in the middle and is filled with versatile clothes that ride the line between dressy and casual.
Wearing Converse with a skirt, an insanely gorgeous Louis Vuitton bag with a sweatshirt, or a vintage Chanel jacket on a plane (yes, I’ve done it and it felt so good), is my idea of dressing in the middle, and it leaves me feeling perfectly appropriate for everyday life, and takes me pretty much anywhere in our uber casual world.
When trying to dress in the middle, it helps to build my outfit on a one-to-one ratio, meaning one casual piece for every dressy piece. For this outfit, this pink LV bag (borrowed from The Vintage Contessa…SWOON!), and polkadot skirt are my dressy pieces, and my bow sweatshirt and Converse bring this look back to the middle since they are so casual. In our extremely casual culture where pajamas and flip-flops are appropriate travel attire, it’s so refreshing to find a pajama level of comfort in a sophisticated and stylish way.
