Since it’s officially September, aka the fashion New Year, right now is the perfect time to share the 11 wardrobe staples every woman needs in her closet. While we are eyeing all of the fun fall trends, let’s comb through our closets and make sure we have the basics to pair them with.
The great thing about these classic pieces is that they are available at every price, so whether you’re wanting to invest in an original, or grab a cheap thrill, you can add these classics to your closet with ease. Scroll down to see my picks for every budget.
1 \\ Striped Shirt
A striped shirt is one of my personal favorites. Originally part of the French naval uniform, this classic pattern has timeless appeal. My personal favorite is from Saint James, and J.Crew always offers lots of striped shirts at a great range of prices.
2 \\ Leopard Bag
Leopard is one of those magic patterns that adds the perfect amount of interest to a simple outfit, and can fade into a neutral when paired with something loud. My favorite leopard bag is the foldover clutch from Clare V., and I’ve been eyeing this YSL leopard bag for what seems like forever.
3 \\ Statement Earrings
Statement earrings are one of those glamorous must-haves that look perfect with everything from a white t-shirt to a ball gown, and can pull you out of a bad mood just by clipping them on your lobes. These pink and gold beauties from Rebecca de Ravenel are absolutely to-die-for, and I love the under $50 options from BaubleBar.
4 \\ Modern Denim
Since the 1970’s, denim has been a must-have in the modern woman’s wardrobe, and that hasn’t changed almost 50 years later. The right pair of jeans can update something stale, and bring something outrageous back down to earth. My favorite style of jeans have the right amount of stretch, and hit at the ankle so you can wear them with pretty much any shoes. H&M has made some of my favorite jeans that are currently in my closet, believe it or not. And Madewell’s denim line has quite a following for the fit, and the price.
5 \\ White Blouse
Whether you’re wearing it to an important meeting or your child’s baptism, a classic white blouse is very rarely a fashion mistake. I love this silk white blouse from Frame, and a classic white button up is always chic.
6 \\ Glamorous Sunglasses
Oversized, glamorous sunglasses are one of those accessories that can go from a casual day on vacation, to the dressiest occasion you attend. I love that they are there for me to block the sun when I had time to apply all of my makeup, and shield me from the world when I didn’t get much sleep, and had even less time to apply makeup. This timeless pair from Gucci sunglasses is incredible, and one of my all-time favorites pairs is from Karen Walker. I’ve also been scooping up lots of Le Specs sunglasses this summer. At under $100, you can’t pass them up.
7 \\ Trench Coat
Ahh, the trench coat. Another piece we borrowed from the boys, and made it all our own. Originally designed in the early 1900’s for soldiers digging TRENCHes, I kid you not, this jacket can go over an LBD or jeans, and is great for work or weekend. The one I own is from J.Crew, and has held up for six years now. The most timeless trench money can buy is Burberry, and I love this one that’s under$100.
8 \\ Red Heels
Clothes and accessories that are considered the most versatile are usually in neutral colors, but sometimes a girl needs a major pop of color, and red heels are the perfect answer. Again, the great thing about this staple is that you can get a pair of red pumps for under $100, or you can also dive into a classic pair of Manolos. Either way, tres chic!
9 \\ Cap Toe Flats
They elongate your legs, go with everything from jeans to dresses, and are approved by Coco Chanel herself…do you need any more reasons to love a cap toe flat? My personal favorites are the original Chanel Flats, and I love the modern take Tory Burch made with this pointed toe pair. I also love the vintage feel of this budget friendly pair.
10 \\ Little Black Dress
Another item that Coco Chanel made perennially popular, the Little Black Dress is an item that a girl can rarely have too many of. I love this modern take on the LBD that would look good with Converse, and could be worn to a cocktail party. Find my picks in various prices and silhouettes below.
11 \\ Chain Strap Bag
A chain strap bag is a wardrobe staple that is easily overlooked, but once you own one you’ll wonder how you got along without it. Dressy enough to carry to a wedding or special event, and practical enough to wear with jeans and flats, a chain strap with a fold-over closure is timeless and classic. I currently have my eye on this under $200 version from Rebecca Minkoff, and you obviously cannot go wrong with a vintage Chanel version.
